Jeju Special Self-Governing Province hosted the 4th International Youth Cyber Environment Forum, together with the UNEP National Committee for the Republic of Korea. The forum was organized by the Asia Climate Change Education Center, and sponsored by the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea. The purpose of the forum was to foster next-generation global leaders in the environmental sector by providing an opportunity for the youth to discuss environmental issues online. The participants of the forum exchanged information by making different proposals and had a chance to build capacity to tackle environmental challenges.

The International Youth Cyber Environment Forum was held from June 10 through June 30, marking World Environment Day (June 5), with the theme of ‘The roles and actions of the youth required to tackle climate change.’ The participants had discussions on five topics, including: How can we reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the establishment of a carbon-free city and what are the roles of the youth in the process?; How can we protect the habitats of wild flora and fauna for the conservation of biodiversity and what are the roles of the youth in the process?; What are the roles and actions of the youth required for eco-friendly consumption as a way to put ‘a green lifestyle’ into practice?; How can we tackle climate change by resolving waste issues?; How can we ensure the well-being of the forthcoming generations with a higher possibility of natural disasters and calamities and what are the attitude of the youth required to overcome the hardships?

The participants formed teams of two to four members during the forum, which were led by two different groups including the secondary school students and the undergraduate. Each team submitted a proposal on one of the five given topics. They then had an online discussion by leaving comments on the website of the Cyber Environment Network and Forum of International Youth (at http://youth.encynet.org).
