MOU connecting trails in the East and trails in the West

MOU connecting trails in the East and trails in the West -Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Jeju Olle Foundation and Galicia Tourism Agency signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) □ Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Jeju Olle Foundation and Galicia Tourism Agency signed an MOU at the Santiago Pilgrimage Route Visitor Center on November 8, 2017, to create a trail of healing and cure and further expand it across the world. With this MOU, the three organizations will work together to both conserve and take advantage of eco-friendly trails, develop eco-tourism, and build a cooperative network with other trails and routes around the world. In particular, building a linkage between the Pilgrimage Route in Santiago and the Olle Trail in Jeju, as representative walking trails in the East and the West respectively, will encourage other trails in different part of the world to join in stronger cooperation with each other. For that, the International Road Conference will be held in Jeju in September 2018. Representatives from the Galicia Tourism Agency will visit Jeju, a World Cultural Heritage site, and see first-hand how valuable the UNESCO triple-crown honors are. □ Santiago Pilgrimage Route and Jeju Olle Trail have been playing a pioneering role in changing the patterns of tourism. This year Santiago Pilgrimage Route saw people from 179 countries come walk through the route. The route serves as a catalyst for people from different cultural background to better understand each other while hiking together. The route had about 4,600 people from Korea alone, which ranks 12th in the number of visitors to Pilgrimage Route. Since the Jeju Olle Trail was first opened in 2007, the trail has been playing a pivotal role in transforming the pattern of tourist activities into qualitative tourism. In the future, Jeju Provincial Government will build a system to provide sustainable support and cooperation so that the Olle trail can be conserved better and developed further into the world. □ In the meantime, Director Nava Castro of the Galicia Tourism Agency said at the signing ceremony, “Jeju and Santiago shall work more closely to develop trails in the world”. President Suh Myung-sook of Jeju Olle Foundation said, “I hope that walking through trails can help us conserve the environment beyond national borders and work toward the future together.” Director-General Kim Yang-bo of the Environmental Conservation Bureau said, “I believe that now walking can not only provide healing but also serve as a venue for reconciliation and sharing for further development through better understanding of different cultures and history.” In addition, in connection with the signing of an MOU, the visitor center displayed the pictures of volcanic island and lava tube and haenyeo (woman divers) until November 12, giving an opportunity for visitors from different countries to feel what Jeju is like. <picture> Jeju Special Self-Governing Province – Jeju Olle Foundation – Galicia Tourism Agency, signing an MOU

Result of 2017 International Youth Cyber Environment Forum

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province holds the Cyber Environment Forum every year in order to share various environmental information and to enhance the youths’ ability on solving environmental programs through the presentation and discussion on ‘The Role and Action of Youths for Environmental Conservation’.This Forum, which was the fifth time this year, had began from a student's proposal to hold a forum during the dialogue between IUCN Director General and the Jeju students of environmental club when the Preparatory Committee on 2012 World Conservation Congress was held.This year, Sun-Jin YUN, Professor at Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University, presented 'An Action of Youths for Realizing Sustainable Society', and 30 teams of youth panels proposed their ideas on one of the following sub-themes.1) The Consciousness and Action of Youths on the Impact of Pursuing Living Convenience on Natural Environment2) Development vs. Conservation for Sustainable Society from a Viewpoint of Youths3) The Action of Youths for Clear Sky and Clean Air4) The Action of Youths for Realizing Resource Circulation Society through Re-use of Waste5) The Action of Youths for Maintaining Clean Water and Safe Sanitation Further details can be found at the following URL:http://youth.encynet.org/forums/forumsDetail.do?forumId=141&tp=2

Inaugural Meeting of Global Green Island Summit 2018

Inaugural Meeting of Global Green Island Summit (GGIS) 2018 to be Held in JejuJeju agreed with Hawaii in Okinawa On March 28 at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province agreed with environmental working staff from the State of Hawaii, USA, and the local government of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, that it will hold a Summit for Local Governments together with the inauguration of GGIS. The GGIS, was agreed by the Jeju governor, the governor of Hawaii and the local governor of Okinawa as follow-up to establish a global green partnership at the World Conservation Congress (WCC) held in Hawaii last year. It is a cooperative network where heads of each island discuss biennially the main environmental issues of the islands such as climate change, waste, and energy, to seek optimum solutions. They agreed that the first GGIS will be held in 2018 in Jeju, which is a global environment-oriented city. To this end, governors of Jeju, Hawaii, and Okinawa decided to make joint efforts such as sending letters in joint names asking twenty major islands around the world to take part in the GGIS inauguration and the general meeting to be held in Jeju next year. In addition, the second meeting for the preparations will be held in Jeju early next year. During the working-level talks Kim Yang-bo, director of Jeju Environmental Conservation Bureau, said: ❍ “This opportunity helped Hawaii, Okinawa, and Jeju to join forces to take the lead in environmental conservation of the world’s major islands, and became an important starting point to share pending issues and successful cases and form solutions in the field of environmental conservation that the world faces. We are going to prepare thoroughly to make the event a success.”

Jeju Governor Won Hee-ryong met with IUCN Director General Inger Andersen

Change World Leaders’ Conservation Forum 2018 into Global Environmental ConferenceJeju Governor Won Hee-ryong met with IUCN Director General Inger Andersen“Although global environmental problems originate from the region, solutions should eventually be drawn from joint collaborations around the world.”So said Won Hee-ryong, governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, during a meeting with Inger Andersen, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on January 18th at the Congress Center where the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2017, Davos Forum, was held.At this meeting, Governor Won discussed the joint project between the Jeju government and IUCN, asking for active cooperation to hold World Leaders’ Conservation Forum 2018 as a global environmental conference. “We are in discussions with the Ministry of Environment on preparation for the second forum slated for next year following the World Leaders’ Conservation Forum 2015,” he said. “We are looking forward to continuing cooperation to develop the Forum into a local government-initiated global environmental conference through co-hosting with Jeju, the Korean government, and IUCN to solve global environmental problems.”In regards to the adoption of the resolution discussed at Word Conservation Congress (WCC) 2016 held in Hawaii in September, “I ask you to encourage the Jeju government to establish an education and training program center in Jeju to accept actively guidelines on management of global protected areas and spread them throughout the world,” said Won. He added, “I want to continue to discuss progressive and sustainable ways for an implementation stage of the World Environment Hub Evaluation and Certification System, which will be completed in the first half of this year.”In response, Inger Andersen said, “In order to make the World Environmental Hub Evaluation and Certification System an international standard, it is very important that international organizations with high reliability such as IUCN and ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), and UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) join directly as certification bodies. I hope that we will discuss roles and responsibilities of each organization regarding operations from the first half of this year.”Meanwhile, the Jeju government and IUCN plan to complete the World Environmental Hub Evaluation and Certification System by the first half of this year through public opinion collected from meetings with working groups and coordinating committee, and they are going to seek ways of cooperating with international organizations.
