The 2012 IUCN WCC held in Jeju adopted the resolution on the establishment of the integrated management system for UNESCO protected areas proposed by Jeju Province. As a follow-up measure, IUCN and Jeju cooperated for its implementation.

In partnership with the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Korea, and the secretariats of the Ramsar Convention, the UNESCO World Heritage, the Biosphere Reserves, and the UNESCO Global Geopark, the operational guideline for the protected areas with overlapping international designations, titled “Harmonising the management of Multi-Internationally Designated Areas: Ramsar Sites, World Heritage sites, Biosphere Reserves and UNESCO Global Geoparks”, was officially announced during the IUCN WCC, which was held in Hawaii in September 2016.
